Lookin' At the RIM BlackBerry Curve 3G
By John Parks
The RIM BlackBerry Curve 3G 9330 offered by Verizon is an affordable gorgeous device for email, text messaging, and applications. Also on the front of the Curve 3G is a precise optical trackpad for navigating the display. On the right side, you'll find a camera button, and two buttons for volume. The resolution of the 2.4" display screen of the Curve 3G is only 320x240. When you consider that the current generation of smart-phones carries display resolutions in the 480x360 range, the resolution of the Curve 3G may seem a bit low. Pictures look OK when comparing the Curve 3G display to those higher resolution smart phones, which, admittedly, do cost around $150. Text on the Curve 3G may appear a bit fuzzy.
One drawback for the Curve 3G is that it now comes with only the BlackBerry OS 5 instead of the OS 6. Verizon has announced that the OS 6 will be available "soon" for the Curve 3G. The model previous to the Curve 3G, the Curve 8530, had a 528-MHz processor and 256 MB of RAM; the Curve 3G has a much faster 624-MHz processor and 512 MB of RAM, all of which means better performance for the Curve 3G. You switch between apps appreciably faster, typing messages is easier and quicker, and navigation is very responsive. One negative, though, is the Web browser on the Curve 3G -- it feels a bit sluggish.
Import of settings, phone numbers, and email contacts from Gmail is no problem at all. You can set up and use your BlackBerry email account plus ten other Web email accounts on the Curve 3G. Text messaging is supported for BlackBerry Messenger, AIM, Windows Live, Google Talk, and Yahoo.

BlackBerry Research In Motion (RIM) come back release new product 9900 and 9930
This morning, Research In Motion (RIM) officially announced its latest smartphone, the BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930, at its annual BlackBerry World Conference in Orlando.
iN this BlackBerry World presented by 2-5 Mei di Orlando, Florida, RIM launching dua smartphone news,. Smartphone in network BlackBerry Bold with touch screen and keyboard QWERTY.
Other prduct operating system (OS) BlackBerry is BlackBerry 7. Smartphone with technology NFC (Near Field Communication) function for pocket electronic
Video with 720p. Smartphone use prosesor 1,2 GHz Liquid Graphics and run in 4G/HSPA. But RIM smartphone in this marketplace no comment.
I was lucky enough to get some hands-on time with the new Bold this morning, and though it's difficult to get a truly accurate feel for a smartphone that's tethered to a table and while hundreds of feisty journalists peer over your shoulder, I can say with little hesitation that the Bold 9900 is one very impressive BlackBerry. Here's why.
BlackBerry Bold 9900 First Impressions
The BlackBerry Bold 9900 is a successor to RIM's original Bold handheld, the BlackBerry 9000. And it looks the part; on first glance, the Bold 9900 looks very much like the Bold 9000. And in many ways the exterior of the device is similar: the keyboard design, shape and size are practically identical to the 9000, and the shiny silver bezel that surrounds the handheld also looks just like the old Bold's bezel.
But the similarities end there.
The Bold 9900 is significantly slimmer and a bit lighter than the 9000. In fact, the Bold 9900 is RIM's thinnest BlackBerry ever. And it feels great in the hand. The Bold 9900 form factor is probably my favorite of any BlackBerry smartphone to date.
And the 9900 keyboard is to die for; RIM even called it the best keyboard on any BlackBerry smartphone. And I tend to agree. Though the keyboard looks almost identical to the original Bold 9000 keypad, it's actually slightly larger, because it stretches almost all the way to the sides of the device, while the Bold 9000's bezel is thicker and takes up keyboard space.
blackBerry Bold 9930I spent a few minutes typing on the Bold 9900, and it was truly a pleasure, especially since I used to employ a Bold 9000, and I really miss that keyboard.
On the inside, the Bold is packing an impressive 1.2GHz processor, which helps the software experience feel fast and smooth, with very little lag--at least in the 20 minutes or so I spent with the device. It also has 768MB of RAM, with 8GB of internal storage for media and other data, the most RAM and built-in storage of any current BlackBerry. And the Bold 9900 also supports microSD memory cards up to 32GB. All of these things make the Bold 9900 feel much more "modern" than RIM's past few handhelds.
It's also great looking. Though the silver bezels on both the Bold 9900 and Bold 9000 look similar, they're actually quite different. The new Bold's bezel is made of brushed stainless steel, compared to the silver plastic bezel on the 9000. And that change in bezel material makes a noticeable difference in the appearance of the device; the stainless steel just looks nicer and less flimsy or "cheap."
The rear battery cover is also notable, since it's coated in some sort of glassy-looking epoxy, which adds another touch of luxury to the Bold 9900. RIM definitely seems to have put more focus on looks with the BlackBerry 9900 than any other RIM device. And it shows.
While the original Bold used a trackball for navigation that was sunk into three separate panels that served as the device's call, menu, escape and end call buttons, the new Bold employs a more efficient trackpad that sits in a single piece of smooth material that forms its call and navigation buttons. (The call and end-call buttons are no longer green and red on the Bold 9900. Instead, they're both translucent white.) The new Bold's trackpad also has a glowing ring around it that makes it easy to use in dark environments, another first for a BlackBerry, and a nice addition overall.
The Bold 9900 also has a new mute button on its side, between the volume up and volume down keys, both of which also serve as media controls when music or video is playing. And it has two very small charging panels on its base for use with a BlackBerry Charge Pod--the Bold 9000 had similar, larger panels on its lower sides.
On the software side, RIM's Bold 9900 is the first BlackBerry smartphone to run the upcoming BlackBerry 7 mobile OS, which packs a variety of cool new features and enhancements, as well as a slightly different look and feel due to some modified icon sets. Most notably, BlackBerry 7 packs a new voice-activated universal search feature and a speedier Webkit browser.
The Bold 9900's 2.8-inch, 640x480 (287 PPI) display is impressive as well, and colors look both vivid and bright. The Bold 9900 is the first "candy bar" style BlackBerry with both a touch screen and "physical" QWERTY keyboard. And though it's going to take me a while to get used to using both the screen and trackpad for Bold navigation, I was impressed with how responsive the display was to my touches, taps and pinches. And I look forward to seeing what sorts of new touch-gestures RIM adds in the future.
Honestly, BlackBerry 7 doesn't really feel too different than BlackBerry 6, and that's somewhat unfortunately, since RIM is marketing it as a major OS update. But as mentioned, I was only able to spend 20 minutes with the device, so there could be more to the software than I saw in my brief time with it.
Finally, the device should become available on all or most major U.S. carriers in "late summer" in two flavors: the 9900, for GSM/UMTS networks like AT&T and T-Mobile; and the 9930 "World Phone," with support for both CDMA networks, such as Verizon's, and GSM/UMTS. So the device should become widely available.
BlackBerry 7 supports Near Field Communications (NFC) technology for mobile payments and other short-range wireless data transactions. (Check out this video from BlackBerry World for a look at how NFC works on the Bold 9900.) And the OS also adds support for new hardware features such as a digital compass, accelerometer and proximity sensor, all of which are found within the Bold 9900.
One feature I would really like to see in the 9900 is mobile hotspot support, which was rumored to be coming along with the 9900. But RIM didn't mention it at all while detailing the device. The RIM representative I asked for more details wouldn't comment on unannounced features, though, so there's still a chance the 9900 will have mobile hotspot functionality.
Unfortunately, the Bold 9900 is not a 4G device, which is a slight turnoff, since the device could feel outdated shortly after its release. It does, however, support HSPA+ downloads up to 14.4 Mbps and uploads up to 5.76 Mbps.
So, to sum that all up: I'm already a big fan of the Bold 9900. And it will probably be my next BlackBerry smartphone. Now, I anxiously await the BlackBerry Bold 9900 release. You can expect a full review on CIO.com just as soon as possible, so stayed tuned.

How To Create Your Own Personal Blackberry Themes
How To Create Your Own Personal Blackberry Themes
Article by BrileyKenney (1,517 pts )
A step-by-step guide on how to use the Plasmic Blackberry Theme Builder to create your own custom Blackberry themes.
Getting The Necessary Tools
The first step to building or making anything is, of course, collecting the right tools to do so. In this case the brick and mortar is a little easier to get a hold of and quite a bit cheaper. In order to create your custom theme you will need several things which are listed below.
A Computer-obviously.
A Mini-USB data cable- to connect your Blackberry to the computer.
The Plazmic Theme Builder
Photo Editing Software- To edit and change the theme files for your device.
Blackberry Desktop Manager- To install and remove existing themes and applications on the device.
The very first step we must take is to download the Plazmic Theme builder and the additional Java and Blackberry data files that are needed so your computer can recognize the themes.
Step 1: Download the Plazmic Content Developers Kit for the Blackberry. (You will have to give your name and address and an existing e-mail address, this is simply to register the software)
Step 1.5: Download and install Java JDK version 1.5 or higher on your computer, the latest release at the time this article was edited was Java JDK version 1.6.
Step 2: Download Blackberry JDE (You will have to register for Blackberry's development program in order to download this but it does not cost anything)
Step 3: Download the Blackberry MDS/Email simulator.
Step 4: Download the Blackberry Device Simulator.
Step 5: Install all the programs in that same order before starting Plazmic. It seems like a long and worthless process but I assure you once the theme builder is up and running you will have tons of custom themes on your phone all made by you!
Welcome To Plazmic
Once everything has been downloaded and installed correctly it's time to boot up the Blackberry Plazmic Theme builder. The Plazmic install will install a folder in the programs menu (If you didn't change default settings during install) called "Plazmic CDK 4.5 for Blackberry". Inside the folder (as seen below) will be two applications, one labeled "composer" and the other is named "theme builder".
Select the Theme Builder application and you will be greeted with the Plazmic load screen. Upon booting up you will then be prompted with a new menu box; it will be asking for the name you wish to designate for your new theme as well as the size and type.
The name that is chosen will always remain up to you, in this case however we're just going to leave it as Untitled because it can always be changed later.
The size depends on your Blackberry model number, there are only two sizes and it's rather obvious which size your screen is; *320*240 is wider than it is tall, and the 240*260 screen is opposite. The Blackberry I will be working with is the 8830 World Edition, so 320*240 is the correct resolution size in my case.
The final choice is the type of theme layout and there is a corresponding thumbnail of the chosen type included in the box; the type is basically the overall layout of the home screen for the custom theme. Once you have chosen the theme type you like best click the create button and you will be brought to the main theme creation screen.
Plazmic's Layout
The theme creation screen appears complicated at first but it is actually rather simple. Here is a basic breakdown of the program's layout.
On the left is a skin of the Blackberry device you are creating the theme for; this can be changed to any corresponding Blackberry model as you wish. Navigate to the VIEW menu across the top, and then select the Change Plastics option. You will then be prompted with a pop up box listing different Blackberry models and their matching skins; once you have found the model you wish to display choose it and then click the APPLY button in the bottom right. The skin on the left should refresh; and then you may click the OK button to close the prompt box.
The right side is known as the Inspector menu, where you can change the different screens of the theme. The buttons on the left will let you change each aspect of the them and are listed as follows from top to bottom; banner, home Screen and application Menu, home Screen background and icons, dialog buttons with menus and title bars, message list, call screens, lock screen, and of course the navigation and cursor buttons. A quick browsing through each of the sections proves that this program will completely allow you to customize your theme to your liking. Different pictures can be chosen for the background, lock screen, and incoming call screens. The buttons and icons can also all be altered, and swapped for those you designed specifically for your theme.
More Advanced Tutorial
For the more advanced users, who can now continue on their own; you are free to do as you wish with the program and experiment with the different settings on your own. Once a theme has been built you can click on the EXPORT button under FILE and then Plazmic will then begin building the theme once you have chosen wether you want it in ALX or JAD formats. The Blackberry desktop manager allows ALX files to be installed onto the Blackberry through the Application Loader program therefore ALX would more than likely be the best choice for export.
For beginners who are still lost and would like to know how to advance further with the theme builder you may continue on to the more advanced tutorial.(http://www.brighthub.com)

Blackberry Accessories & Apps Guide
BlackBerry Themes – Blackberry Accessories & Apps Guide
12.12.2009 | Author: Mark Walters | Posted in Mobile Phones
When you install a theme, which is simple and easy to do, it can change the appearance of almost everything on your BlackBerry – the backgrounds, the screens, the home screen, the icons and even the menus. They work in much the same way as the theme system used on Microsoft Windows – literally one click gives a totally different look and feel.
There are plenty of great themes to choose from too. You can find them by visiting online BlackBerry accessories and applications stores, where you will find hundreds to choose. Whatever you’re looking for, you’ll be able to find. They have everything from elegant and classy business themes to fun and quirky entertainment related ones. On the other hand, if you consider yourself creative, why not create your own theme?
The software (BlackBerry Theme Studio v5.0) needed to create your own theme is easy enough to use and, best of all, it’s free. All you need is some creativity and some skill with graphics software. On downloading BlackBerry Theme Studio, you’ll see that there are two products contained within the suite – BlackBerry Composer and BlackBerry Theme Builder.
The BlackBerry Composer is the graphic creation and editing part of the suite, and it’s great for helping you craft images, whether they’re static or animated. It’s a useful piece of graphic design software that has the basic features of the standard graphics packages that most people have on their computer. You can use it to create all the images for your theme, though you can import them from elsewhere should you wish to do so.
The actual designing of the theme is done within the Theme Builder. The selection and allocation of the images is done from here. As well as choosing the images, it’s where you can adjust the fonts, change the position of objects on the screen, and set what, if any, sounds and animations are used, and they when they play.
If you fancy making some extra money for yourself, and there is even the potential to make some seriously big money, then you can sell the themes that you create on BlackBerry accessories and applications stores. These online stores can also be used to get inspiration for creating themes. Browse through the list of top sellers and most sought after themes and you’ll have no shortage of ideas – you could even use them as templates for your own ones.
To summarize, if you’re someone that wants to make your BlackBerry truly your own, then installing a theme, to go along with some cool BlackBerry accessories, is the way to go.
