news arsenal : Late drama sees Arsenal crumble

Arsenal saw their Premier League title hopes all but extinguished after Dirk Kuyt secured a point for Liverpool with a last-gasp penalty just moments after Robin van Persie's own spot-kick had looked enough for victory.

The Gunners - now six point points behind leaders Manchester United having played the same number of games - had plenty of possession and hit the bar in the first half through Laurent Koscielny, but were unable to make their dominance count until deep into eight minutes of stoppage time when van Persie crashed home a spot-kick.

However, Liverpool - who had earlier seen captain Jamie Carragher carried off following concussion - snatched a point with the final kick of the match after Emmanuel Eboue had pushed Lucas Leiva.

Reds boss Kenny Dalglish added: "What my team did at the end epitomised what they did all day. Everything was battling against us and they still remained committed to get something from the game. That's fantastic. You can maybe play better but you won't find a more committed team than the one out there today."

Respectful beginnings
While the match ended in high drama, before kick-off there was a minute's silence in memory of late Arsenal director Danny Fiszman, who passed away following a battle against cancer and also remembering the 96 Liverpool supporters who died 22 years ago this week in the Hillsborough tragedy.

The sale of Fiszman's holding in the Gunners' parent company led to American Stan Kroenke crossing the takeover threshold, but it remains to be seen whether the Denver-based entrepreneur will be able to complete his proposed £730m buyout.

When the action got under way, Arsenal - unbeaten in 14 matches and yet to lose in 2011 - started well, with Abou Diaby glancing a header wide from Samir Nasri's curling free-kick. Arsenal were careless in possession far too often, with Liverpool quick to capitalise on the break.
Everything was battling against us and they still remained committed to get something from the game. That's fantastic.
Kenny Dalglish, Liverpool manager

The hosts sparked into life, though, after 12 minutes when Theo Walcott stung Pepe Reina with a fierce 25-yard drive which the Reds keeper spilled and van Persie hooked the loose ball back across an open goal, which was headed behind. From van Persie's right wing corner, Laurent Koscielny got up above the Liverpool defence and in front of Reina to crash a header against the bar.

Liverpool were forced into a change on 21 minutes when full-back Fabio Aurelio limped off with a recurrence of his hamstring problem, replaced by 17-year-old Jack Robinson for a second senior appearance.

Luis Suarez's slip allowed van Persie and Cesc Fabregas to open up the Liverpool defence, but the Arsenal skipper drilled his 20-yard shot wide. Liverpool were being pegged back, with Walcott firing a low ball in from the right which was booted behind.

It continued to be one-way traffic with Liverpool defending deep, but Arsenal could not find a telling pass in the final third. In first-half stoppage time, Eboue's angled drive at the near post was deflected across the face of goal and away.

Carroll casualty
It was again a bright opening by Liverpool after the restart. Suarez created space for himself at the edge of the Arsenal penalty area, but dragged his shot wide. There was a scare for the visitors when Andy Carroll went down after twisting his knee and ankle when challenging for a loose ball in the box. After some treatment, though, the £35m England man was back in the action.

Reds skipper Carragher then appeared to have been knocked unconscious after a clash of heads with John Flanagan, sparking more anxious scenes on the visitors bench as the medical staff from both teams attended. The former England defender was eventually carried off on a stretcher, his neck in a brace and given oxygen. Sotirios Kyrgiakos came on as a substitute.

With 20 minutes left, Carroll was replaced by Jonjo Shelvey before Arsenal made a double change when Jack Wilshere and Walcott were replaced by Nicklas Bendtner and Andrey Arshavin, the Russian making his 100th appearance for the Gunners.

Wojciech Szczesny got down well to beat away an angled shot from Suarez as Liverpool looked to snatch all three points. Reina made a decent block when van Persie was played into the left side of the Liverpool area, before at the other end, Suarez spooned his shot high and wide in space at the near post.

Stoppage-time drama
Because of the injury to Carragher, there were some eight minutes of stoppage time, and just when that seemed to be running out, Fabregas went tumbling over Jay Spearing's leg and this time, the referee pointed to the spot. Van Persie stepped up to send Reina the wrong way and seemingly keep Arsenal in the title hunt.

However, there was more late drama after Alex Song tripped Lucas right on the edge of the area. Suarez's free-kick went into the wall, but Eboue then pushed over Lucas to conceded another stoppage-time spot-kick which Kuyt dispatched.

It proved the last action of an amazing end to the game, which leaves Arsenal all but out of the title race and left a dejected Arsene Wenger confronting the officials - and opposite number Kenny Dalglish as they walked off. fifa.com

Namun, seharusnya peluit akhir berbunyi setelah Luis Suarez mendapatkan tendangan bebas namun tendangannya masih membentur dinding pertahanan.

"Waktu tambahan sebenarnya hanya delapan menit," ungkap Wenger seperti dilansir Sky Sport.

Sayangnya, Arsenal bermodalkan rekor buruk menghadapi Liverpool.

Rekor total pertemuan:
Liverpool 172 65 45 62 242-233
Arsenal 172 62 45 65 233-242

Rekor sepuluh pertemuan terakhir:
13 Desember 2009 Liga Primer Liverpool 1-2 Arsenal
29 Oktober 2009 Piala Liga Arsenal 2-1 Liverpool
22 April 2009 Liga Primer Liverpool 4-4 Arsenal
21 Desember 2008 Liga Primer Arsenal 1-1 Liverpool
9 April 2008 Liga Champions Liverpool 4-2 Arsenal
5 April 2008 Liga Primer Arsenal 1-1 Liverpool
3 April 2008 Liga Champions Arsenal 1-1 Liverpool
28 Oktober 2007 Liga Primer Liverpool 1-1 Arsenal
31 Maret 2007 Liga Primer Liverpool 4-1 Arsenal
10 Januari 2007 Piala Liga Liverpool 3-6 Arsenal

Manchester United v Arsenal FA Cup Preview Match, March 12, 2011

Manchester United and Arsenal will both look to redeem some confidence and pride after a disappointing last few weeks when they face off against each other at Old Trafford on Saturday. The Red Devils will be looking to bounce back from their abominable performance at Anfield last weekend against arch-rivals Liverpool, where they were handed a thrashing, that game their second defeat on the bounce after their away loss at the hands of Chelsea. Arsenal, on the other hand, were dealt with a double blow in quick succession, as they were beaten by Birmingham in the Carling Cup final and bowed out of the Champions League after recieving a thumping at the Nou Camp, not for the first time in recent years.

With the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool out of the FA Cup already, the winner of this tie becomes huge favourites to lift the cup, along with Manchester City, who play Championship side Reading in their quarterfinal match on Sunday. The two teams in question faced each other once already this season at Old Trafford, with Manchester United winning that Premier League game 1-0 courtesy of a Ji Sung Park strike.

Manchester United:

The Premier League leaders play their third consecutive 'big match' this weekend, after their trips to Chelsea and Liverpool last week. The Red Devils didn't fare too well in either game, earning losses in both. They will be thankful that the draw has been kinder to them, with the match being played out at Old Trafford and not the Emirates. They had to face Crawley Town in the last round of the FA Cup, a match in which they struggled to make their superiority felt over the non-league side. They laboured to a 1-0 win, and will need a better performance from that day to beat Arsenal.

Antonio Valencia has not played since September, but is likely to make the teamsheet this weekend, after having travelled with the team last week. That will be a huge boost for Sir Alex Ferguson, who will be missing Nani through injury, after the Portugese winger was hacked down by Jamie Carragher, tearing a tendon on his left leg. A huge relief for United will be the return of captain Nemanja Vidic, who missed the Liverpool game through suspension. Rio Ferdinand is also on the comeback trail, but the Arsenal game might be too early for him.

United face another crucial game in three days' time after facing the Gunners, as they host Marseille in the second leg of their Champions League round of sixteen tie precariously placed at 0-0. Sir Alex's squad selection may have a lot to do with players he wants to keep fresh for the Marseille game, and it would be no surprise if some fringe squad members get the nod for Saturday. Following that, they will stay at home, facing Bolton Wanderers in their third home game in succession.

Arsenal :

Till a fortnight back, Arsenal were vying for all four major honours this season. Now they face a tough trip to Manchester, where a defeat will see their chances to win their first piece of silverware since 2005 reduce to a fourth of what it was eleven days back. While Arsenal have largely played good football this season, luck has refused to be a lady on their side. Their Carling Cup final defeat came from a miscommunication in defence that happens once in a couple of hundred games, while Robin van Persie's sending off when they were leading 3-2 on aggregate against Barcelona was ludicrous to say the least.

Their tale of woe doesn't end there, had it not been for a missed penalty by Tomas Rosicky early in the season against Sunderland or the sending off of Abou Diaby in the Newcastle game where they led 4-0, Arsenal would be top of the Premier League right now. The Gunners will be desperately hoping that the football gods stop dealing them poor cards and if not at least smile on them, just stop interferring in their games. The truth in football like in life is however that you need to make your own luck and its time for Arsenal to forget about the past and start playing some football in a way only they can.

Captain Cesc Fabregas will miss the tie after suffering a recurrence of his hamstring problem, joining the likes of Theo Walcott, Alex Song and Thomas Vermaelen on the treatment table. Striker Robin van Persie will be available to play the game, but may not be risked from the start. In fact, it would be surprising if a large number of the first eleven who started against Barcelona feature at Old Trafford.

Betting: Arsenal

Odds correct at time of writing. For latest Betfair prices, see www.manutd.com/bet .
United head into Saturday’s quarter-final against Arsenal as 3.4 (12/5) FA Cup favourites. The Reds haven’t won the competition since 2004 but it’s recent form that might stop some bettors backing Sir Alex's men to win this one at 2.0 (evens).
At Anfield, United were outplayed and out-muscled but the Reds are strong enough and smart enough to move on from two consecutive defeats. This is where a good memory comes in: two years ago United lost two in a row at this stage of the season and went on to win the title. Sir Alex knows how to move on from disappointments and that’s why we’re backing the Reds for the Premier League at 1.82 (4/5).
This weekend, though, it's all about the FA Cup and you should back the Reds to beat Arsenal. Anything above odds-on for a win at Old Trafford should always be snapped up. We’re not taking Arsenal lightly but they haven’t won at the Theatre of Dreams for nearly five years and last time they travelled to M16 in this competition they lost 4-0.
The Gunners aren’t coming into this tie in good spirits, either, having been humiliated by Barcelona in midweek. Cesc

Arsenal Football Club started out as Dial Square in 1886 by workers at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich, south-east London, and was renamed Royal Arsenal shortly afterwards.[3] The club was renamed again to Woolwich Arsenal after becoming a limited company in 1893.[4] The club became the first southern member of the Football League in 1893, starting out in the Second Division, and won promotion to the First Division in 1904. The club's relative geographic isolation resulted in lower attendances than those of other clubs, which led to the club becoming mired in financial problems and effectively bankrupt by 1910, when they were taken over by businessmen Henry Norris and William Hall.[5] Norris sought to move the club elsewhere, and in 1913, soon after relegation back to the Second Division, Arsenal moved to the new Arsenal Stadium in Highbury, North London; they dropped "Woolwich" from their name the following year.[6] Arsenal only finished in fifth place in 1919, but were nevertheless elected to rejoin the First Division at the expense of local rivals Tottenham Hotspur, by reportedly dubious means.[7]

Arsenal appointed Herbert Chapman as manager in 1925. Having already won the league twice with Huddersfield Town in 1923–24 and 1924–25 (see Seasons in English football), Chapman brought Arsenal their first period of major success. His revolutionary tactics and training, along with the signings of star players such as Alex James and Cliff Bastin, laid the foundations of the club's domination of English football in the 1930s.[8] Under his guidance Arsenal won their first major trophies – victory in the 1930 FA Cup Final preceded two League Championships, in 1930–31 and 1932–33. In addition, Chapman was behind the 1932 renaming of the local London Underground station from "Gillespie Road" to "Arsenal", making it the only Tube station to be named specifically after a football club.[9]

Chapman died suddenly of pneumonia in early 1934, leaving Joe Shaw and George Allison to carry on his successful work. Under their guidance, Arsenal won three more titles, in 1933–34, 1934–35 and 1937–38, and the 1936 FA Cup. As key players retired, Arsenal had started to fade by the decade's end, and then the intervention of the Second World War meant competitive professional football in England was suspended.[10][11][12]

After the war, Arsenal enjoyed a second period of success under Allison's successor Tom Whittaker, winning the league in 1947–48 and 1952–53, and the FA Cup in 1950. Their fortunes waned thereafter; unable to attract players of the same calibre as they had in the 1930s, the club spent most of the 1950s and 1960s in trophyless mediocrity. Even former England captain Billy Wright could not bring the club any success as manager, in a stint between 1962 and 1966.[12][13][14]

Arsenal began winning silverware again with the surprise appointment of club physiotherapist Bertie Mee as manager in 1966. After losing two League Cup finals, they won their first European trophy, the 1969–70 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. This was followed by an even greater triumph: their first League and FA Cup double in 1970–71.[15] This marked a premature high point of the decade; the Double-winning side was soon broken up and the following decade was characterised by a series of near misses. Arsenal finished as First Division runners-up in 1972–73, lost three FA Cup finals, in 1972, 1978 and 1980, and lost the 1980 Cup Winners' Cup final on penalties. The club's only success during this time was a last-minute 3–2 victory over Manchester United in the 1979 FA Cup Final, widely regarded as a classic.[12][16]

The return of former player George Graham as manager in 1986 brought a third period of glory. Arsenal won the League Cup in 1986–87, Graham's first season in charge. This was followed by a League title win in 1988–89, won with a last-minute goal in the final game of the season against fellow title challengers Liverpool. Graham's Arsenal won another title in 1990–91, losing only one match, won the FA Cup and League Cup double in 1993, and a second European trophy, the Cup Winners' Cup, in 1994.[12][17] Graham's reputation was tarnished when he was found to have taken kickbacks from agent Rune Hauge for signing certain players,[18] and he was dismissed in 1995. His replacement, Bruce Rioch, lasted for only one season, leaving the club after a dispute with the board of directors.[19]
A group of people on a red open-topped bus wave to a crowd of onlookers.
Arsenal's players and fans celebrate their 2004 League title win with an open-top bus parade.

The club's success in the late 1990s and first decade of the 21st century owed a great deal to the 1996 appointment of Arsène Wenger as manager. Wenger brought new tactics, a new training regime and several foreign players who complemented the existing English talent. Arsenal won a second League and Cup double in 1997–98 and a third in 2001–02. In addition, the club reached the final of the 1999–2000 UEFA Cup (losing on penalties to Galatasaray), were victorious in the 2003 and 2005 FA Cups, and won the Premier League in 2003–04 without losing a single match, an achievement which earned the side the nickname "The Invincibles";[20] in all, the club went 49 league matches unbeaten, a national record.[21]

Arsenal finished in either first or second place in the league in eight of Wenger's first eleven seasons at the club, although on no occasion were they able to retain the title.[12] As of 2009, they were one of only four teams, the others being Manchester United, Blackburn Rovers and Chelsea, to have won the Premier League since its formation in 1992.[22] Arsenal had never progressed beyond the quarter-finals of the Champions League until 2005–06; in that season they became the first club from London in the competition's fifty-year history to reach the final, in which they were beaten 2–1 by Barcelona.[23] In July 2006, they moved into the Emirates Stadium, after 93 years at Highbury.[24arsenal jackets
